Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon seasoning salt
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 4 lbs boneless pork shoulder
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 can dr. pepper (not diet)
- barbecue sauce for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 300℉.
- In a medium bowl, mix together brown sugar, seasoning salt, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, chili powder, ground mustard, onion powder, and black pepper.
- Cut the pork shoulder into pieces weighing roughly 1 lb each and coat them with the seasoning mix.
- Heat oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Sear the pork pieces for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden, taking care not to let the sugar burn.
- Pour the Dr. Pepper into the hot Dutch oven to deglaze, then cover and transfer to the oven.
- Bake for 2½-3 hours until the meat is tender and pulls apart easily, reaching an internal temperature of at least 200℉.
- Shred the meat and serve with cooking juices or barbecue sauce, according to preference.
Notes
Ensure the pork shoulder is evenly coated in the seasoning for maximum flavor.
Keep an eye on the searing process to prevent burning due to sugar content.
This pulled pork can be served in sandwiches, tacos, or on its own.
