  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon powder
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup chicken broth or stock
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup extra sharp cheddar cheese freshly shredded
  • 4 cups cooked chicken prepared rotisserie, shredded/chopped

Instructions

  1. Cook the rice following the package directions.
  2. In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour until smooth and combined, cooking for 1 minute while stirring constantly.
  3. Add the Italian seasoning, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and bouillon powder, stirring to combine.
  4. Gradually mix in the chicken stock and then the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture is smooth. Bring it to a boil, then reduce heat, cooking until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese, one quarter cup at a time, until melted and smooth. Mix in the shredded chicken and adjust seasoning to taste, adding salt if necessary.
  6. Prepare the desired toppings and place them in bowls.
  7. Serve rice on plates, spoon the chicken gravy over the rice, and finish with toppings. Serve immediately.

Notes

Feel free to use leftover chicken or a rotisserie chicken for convenience.
