- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 large yellow onion finely chopped
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp chives chopped, for garnish, optional
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion, sugar, and salt. Cook, stirring often, until the onions are soft, golden, and caramelized, about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let the onions cool completely.
- In a bowl, stir together the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, and black pepper.
- Fold in the cooled onions until well combined.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to let the flavors develop.
- Sprinkle with chives before serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce.
Serve with fresh veggies or chips for dipping.
Can be made a day in advance for parties.
