- 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 (15.25 ounce) box german chocolate cake mix, plus additional ingredients called for on the package
- ½ cup salted butter, softened at room temperature
- 8 ounce block cream cheese, softened at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup confectioner's sugar
- ¾ cup chocolate chips
- optional, for serving: vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, or caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a deep 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Spread the shredded coconut and chopped pecans evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the instructions provided on the package.
- Pour the prepared cake batter over the layer of coconut and pecans in the dish.
- In a mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter, cream cheese, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
- Gradually add the confectioner’s sugar and continue mixing until well combined.
- Dollop spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture over the cake batter.
- Gently swirl the cream cheese into the cake batter using a knife; be careful not to over-mix to maintain the ribbon effect.
- Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly on top of the batter and cream cheese mixture.
- Bake in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes, checking for doneness by pressing the center of the cake with your fingers.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan before slicing; for warm servings, slice after about 20 minutes and serve with your choice of ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use fresh shredded coconut instead of sweetened.
Allow the cake to cool entirely for cleaner serving if cutting into squares.
