Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (24 ounce) jar marinara sauce
- ¾ cup water
- 2 teaspoons italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 (19 ounce) bag frozen cheese tortellini, not thawed
- 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese (or italian 5-cheese blend)
- 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
- optional garnish: chopped fresh basil, parsley, or other herbs
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
- In a large measuring cup or bowl, whisk together the marinara sauce, water, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
- Pour a thin layer of the sauce mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Arrange half of the frozen tortellini in a single layer over the sauce.
- Pour about half of the remaining sauce mixture on top of the tortellini.
- Sprinkle ½ cup of mozzarella over the sauce layer.
- Place the remaining tortellini in a second layer, covering them with the rest of the sauce. Press down gently to ensure all tortellini are coated.
- Top with the remaining mozzarella and finish with Parmesan cheese.
- Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes until the tortellini are al dente. For a nice, browned cheese top, you can broil for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with extra Parmesan and fresh herbs if you like.
Notes
Feel free to substitute the marinara with your favorite pasta sauce.
Adding more cheese can enhance the flavor and make it creamier.
For a spicier version, consider adding red pepper flakes to the sauce.
