- 4 cups water
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup old-fashioned grits
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup smoked Gouda cheese, shredded
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Optional: fresh herbs (thyme or parsley) for garnish
Instructions
- Bring water, heavy cream, and salt to a boil in a pot.
- Stir in the grits and cover, then lower the heat to simmer.
- Cook grits for 12-15 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Add butter once most liquid is absorbed and melt it in.
- Fold in shredded smoked Gouda until melted and well-mixed.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
- Serve warm, garnished with more smoked Gouda or fresh herbs.
Notes
Use old-fashioned grits for best texture and flavor.
Stir frequently to prevent clumping.
Add more heavy cream or water for thinner consistency.
