Ingredients

  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons chili seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1 (27 oz) can chili beans (do not drain or rinse)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)
  • Chopped onions (for topping)
  • Sour cream (for topping)
  • Jalapeños (for topping)
  • Cilantro (for garnish)
  • Avocado (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  • Add chopped onion and sauté for 2 minutes, then add minced garlic and continue for 2 minutes.
  • Stir in ground beef and cook until browned; drain excess grease if necessary.
  • Add tomato sauce, chili seasoning, salt, and crushed red pepper. Simmer uncovered for 20 minutes.
  • Mix in chili beans with their juice and simmer for another 10 minutes.
  • Serve with desired toppings.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored for up to 5 days in an airtight container.
For a lighter version, substitute ground beef with turkey or plant-based protein.
Adjust crushed red pepper for desired spice level.
