  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 4 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated, divided
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper (or to taste)
  • 3 cups fresh mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook penne pasta in salted water until al dente, about 8-10 minutes, then drain.
  • Heat olive oil in a pot, add Italian sausage, and brown for 5-7 minutes.
  • Add onions and garlic, sauté for 2-3 minutes until onions are soft.
  • Pour in tomato sauce, mix in Italian seasoning, ½ cup Parmesan, parsley, and basil. Simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  • Combine cooked pasta with the sauce.
  • Layer half of the pasta in a casserole pan, top with half of the mozzarella, repeat, and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan.
  • Bake for 25 minutes until cheese is golden brown, let cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For deeper flavor, allow the sauce to simmer longer.
Use high-quality Italian sausage for best results.
