- 1 pound (454 grams) penne pasta
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- 1 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
- 4 cups tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 1 cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated, divided
- ¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
- ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper (or to taste)
- 3 cups fresh mozzarella cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook penne pasta in salted water until al dente, about 8-10 minutes, then drain.
- Heat olive oil in a pot, add Italian sausage, and brown for 5-7 minutes.
- Add onions and garlic, sauté for 2-3 minutes until onions are soft.
- Pour in tomato sauce, mix in Italian seasoning, ½ cup Parmesan, parsley, and basil. Simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Combine cooked pasta with the sauce.
- Layer half of the pasta in a casserole pan, top with half of the mozzarella, repeat, and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan.
- Bake for 25 minutes until cheese is golden brown, let cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
For deeper flavor, allow the sauce to simmer longer.
Use high-quality Italian sausage for best results.
