- 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 1/2 cups half-and-half
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 32 ounces frozen peas, thawed
- 4 ounces canned mushrooms, drained
- 6 ounces French fried onions
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Thaw the frozen peas completely.
- Melt butter in a skillet and sauté onion and garlic until soft.
- Sprinkle flour into the skillet; whisk and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually add half-and-half, whisk until thickened, then remove from heat.
- In a bowl, combine peas, mushrooms, and cheddar cheese; pour the sauce over and mix.
- Transfer to a baking dish, spread evenly, and bake for 20 minutes.
- Add fried onions on top and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
- Allow to cool slightly, then serve.
Notes
Ensure peas are fully thawed to avoid excess water.
Using smoked cheddar can enhance the flavor.
Stir the sauce constantly to maintain a smooth consistency.
