Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium-to-large slices of bread (6 to 9 ounces)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
- pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
- fine salt, to taste
Instructions
- Tear the bread into 2-inch pieces and place them in a food processor or blender. Add optional garlic powder, oregano, and red pepper flakes, then process until finely crumbed.
- Set a large plate near the stove. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until the foam subsides, swirling the pan for even melting. Test temperature by dropping a few crumbs; they should sizzle.
- Increase the heat to medium-high and add the bread crumbs to the skillet. Stir constantly for 3 to 5 minutes until they turn crisp and golden brown in spots.
- Transfer the toasted bread crumbs to the plate to cool in an even layer. Season with salt before use. Store any leftovers in a sealed bag at room temperature for up to 3 months.
Notes
For a flavor boost, experiment with different seasonings like Italian herbs or Parmesan cheese.
Ensure the pan is hot enough before adding the bread crumbs to achieve the perfect crunch.
Check stored crumbs for quality before use if kept for a while.
