- 2 cups hot water
- 2 tablespoons softened butter
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1½ cups masarepa (preferably P.A.N. brand)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella (or sliced mozzarella)
- ¼ cup oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Mix hot water, softened butter, and kosher salt in a bowl.
- Gradually add masarepa, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Divide dough into 10 equal balls, each about ¼ cup.
- Make an indentation in each ball, add cheese, and seal tightly.
- Flatten each ball into patties about 3” wide and ½” thick.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Cook arepas for 5-7 minutes until golden, then flip and cook for another 3-5 minutes.
- Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
Notes
Add masarepa gradually for the right dough consistency.
Cook over medium heat to prevent burning.
Keep arepas warm by covering with a towel while cooking.
