- 1 ½ cups masarepa (recommended: P.A.N brand)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella (or sliced mozzarella)
- ¼ cup oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Combine hot water, softened butter, and kosher salt in a bowl until mixed.
- Gradually add masarepa, mixing until no dry flour remains.
- Ensure the dough is soft and not sticky; adjust with more masarepa if needed.
- Divide the dough into 10 balls, each about ¼ cup.
- Create an indentation in each ball, fill with mozzarella, and seal tightly.
- Flatten each ball into a 3-inch wide cake.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook arepas for 5-7 minutes until golden.
- Flip and cook for another 3-5 minutes until browned and cheese bubbles.
- Serve warm, optionally sprinkled with flaky salt.
Notes
Use fresh masarepa for the best flavor and texture.
Experiment with different types of cheese for varied taste.
Do not overcrowd the skillet for even cooking.
