- 1 cup (244 g) unsweetened apple butter
- 3/4 cup (180 ml) buttermilk, at room temperature
- 2 oz (56 g) cream cheese, softened
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) pure maple syrup
- 3–4 tbsp (25–32 g) powdered sugar (adjust for sweetness)
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) whole milk
Instructions
- Make crumb topping: mix butter, brown sugar, flour, and spices until coarse crumbs form; refrigerate.
- Prepare spiced apples: cook diced apples with spices and brown sugar for about 10 minutes; set aside to cool.
- Make cake batter: preheat oven to 350°F. Mix dry ingredients, then cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla, then mix in apple butter and buttermilk.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed. Pour batter into prepared pan, layer spiced apples, then add crumb topping.
- Bake for 65-80 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 30 minutes, then transfer to a rack.
- Prepare cream cheese frosting: mix cream cheese and maple syrup, blend in powdered sugar, then add milk.
- Once cooled, slice cake and drizzle with frosting before serving.

Do not overmix the batter; mix until just combined.
